Hold the Mayo

Dennis Nett / The Post-Standard
OJ Mayo is one of the most hyped freshman basketball players in the nation and his college debut the other night he put up 32 points - in an inexplicable loss to Mercer College of all people. Last night another super freshmen point guard made his collegiate debut, and of what a debut it was. Jonny Flynn scored 28 points and handed out nine assists in SU's 97-89 win versus Siena. It was a truly special performance and the most telling statistic - he only took 13 shots to get those 28 points. Give me a kid like that over a narcissistic ball hog like Mayo any day.

Here are some random thoughts as the Flynn era gets underway:

* The ball movement was very good for the most part. Guys were looking to set each other up, and Paul Harris was especially effective getting into the lane and getting the big guys the ball.

* Speaking of Harris, the only way he doesn't average double figure rebounds this year is if he finds himself on the bench in foul trouble. If he's on the floor, he's getting his hands on the ball.

* Obviously the turnovers were a team wide problem, Siena's ball pressure and attacking guards did a good job of exploiting what could be a year long weakness.

* The defense was beyond horrendous, the rotations in the zone were non existent, there were certain times when people failed to STOP THE BALL and the zone itself was a mess. I would have liked to have seen Boeheim go back to the man to man at some point in the second half, but in close games, he's almost always going to use the zone as a security blanket.

* I would have liked to have seen them exploit their size advantage more. This team settles for a lot of jumpers, and when they go in - like they did last night - everything will be fine. But with Arinze down low, they need to feel more comfortable pounding the ball. Speaking of down low -

* Rick Jackson is a player. He's like an old school, 1970s center. Nothing flashy, but fundamentally sound. Once he gets stronger, he's going to give a lot of opponents serious headaches.

* Donte Greene did a nice job of letting the game come to him - plus he was aggressive at the end of the game attacking the glass, which was great. He disappears for stretches, and I'd like to see him demand the ball in the post more, especially against a small team like Siena.

* If Devo is going left, he's going to finish and that's a fact. If his jumper is going down, you have to pick your poison if you are defending him.

* Scoop Jardine looked a little nervous last night, he'll settle down in time (then again, I thought this about Terrance Roberts too)

* This team isn't going to guard anyone, but wow they are going to be fun to watch - which makes them the exact opposite of the football team.

* Siena is a good basketball team, stop back at the end of the year when they've won 20 something games.

* That Flynn guy - he's pretty good...................

Enjoy the season people, it's going to be a wild, wild ride.

Gotta love Cuse hoops off to a 2-0 start. The freshman Flynne and Greene are looking great so far and Flynne has definitely got a flair for the dramatic. For those who didn't realize it, he broke Melo's freshman debut scoring record in the first game. The 2 extra games in the Garden next week will be a great experience for this young group. Second, here we go again with NFL network. The Thanksgiving night game between the Packers and Cowboys will only be shown on NFL networks. They pulled this crap last year and it didn't set well with me. Hey NFL, wake the hell up, don't screw over your loyal fanbase and not show game on network TV. Remember, this is a time when family and friends are together and possibly the only day of football some families get together over the course of the season. Newsflash NFL, you wouldn't be rolling in dough without your loyal fan base so do the right thing and show the damn game. Third, score one for the good guys, arrogant Elliot has thrown in the towel on his dumb idea to give illegals drivers licenses. In 3 years I hope New Yorkers remember his arrogance and lack of sound judgement throughout the affair and punch his ticket to retirement as NY Gov. Finally, I still don't think Hillary has taken a position on the issue 2 weeks later...hey Hillary, want some syrup with those waffles? Or maybe her staff forgot to plant the appropriate question in the audience?? Just wondering.
