Mangino's going to Miami....

With all due respect to Clarence Clemmons of the E-Street Band, the "Big Man" of college football is headed to Miami. Mark Mangino's KU Jayhawks learned last night they are headed to the Orange Bowl for a date with an official E.O.I., the Hokies.

Fox's "BCS Selection Show" was painful to watch. Their weak attempt at recapturing the drama of the NCAA Basketball Tournament Selection Show was more frustrating than entertaining. There's only so long you can stretch a "selection" of 10 teams. For a complete look at all of this season's bowl games, be sure to check out Pete Fiutak's great rundown over at collegefootballnews.

With rants about the stupidity of the BCS and the necessity of a playoff aside, here's what's jumping out at me this bowl season:

  • I have no problems with LSU making the title game. They play in the best conference in the country and week in and week out have been the most impressive. However, do you really think Ohio State is one of the two best teams in the country right now? I know they have only one loss. But if this was a horse race right now, my money would be on Georgia, Oklahoma, or USC before the Buckeyes.
  • We love Mangino. KU has been a great story this year. But no way do they deserve to go to the Orange Bowl over a Mizzou team that beat them convincingly. Mizzou is getting penalized for playing in a title game. We're still pulling for you Coach Mangino!
  • Is it me or does Michigan play in the Capital One Bowl (artist formerly known as Citrus Bowl) every year?
  • Holiday Bowl, year in and year out one of the most entertaining games of the bowl season. This year's edition should be no different with a great Texas-ASU matchup.
  • South Florida-Oregon, in October this potential matchup had much different implications.
  • The New Orleans Bowl now has a sponsor, here's to R+L Carriers!

As much as I dream of a playoff, I still watch just about every one of these bowl games. It all gets started in 17 short days.

Coach Mangino, you've gotta break out the Speedo on South Beach!

Great work Champ - here's hoping Mangino doesn't eat south beach and saves some for the rest of us.

Good point on the championship game. If you don't play in one, you're penalized (Georgia) but if you lose one, you're penalized worse (Missouri).
