One of the few highlights of this football season was TW-26's replay of the 1987 undefeated season. So many great memories: the thrashing of Penn State, Michael Owens' 2-pt conversion, and running the table. Donnie's recent article on Pat Dye really hit home, even 20 years later. This 'man' interrupted a speaking engagement by Orange QB and '88 Sugar Bowl MVP Donnie McPherson to present him with an Auburn tie. Pat, that takes balls, something you were certainly lacking 20 years ago.
For the youngsters out there, back in 1987 there was no overtime in college football and it was not uncommon for games to end in ties. Let me clarify...it was not uncommon for REGULAR SEASON games to end it ties. Faced with a decision of playing to win versus playing not to lose, Pat went with not losing.
In contrast, here's what a real coach does. Tom Osborne could have tied Miami and ended up a National Champion. However, he believed in something bigger.....like winning.
