I can't believe I'm about to type these words. But watching ESPN this weekend, I actually found myself agreeing with a point that smug hall of famer Doug Gottlieb made during a studio segment. He basically called out Bobby Knight for quitting on his team in the middle of the season. To paraphrase Doug, he classifies Bobby as a bit of hypocrite. He questions how Knight would handle a player on his own team who quit in the middle of the season. Well, I think we all know how he'd handle that. Furthermore, Dougie points out how Knight is walking a way from a University that just extended his contract with the proviso that his son would be handed the reigns upon his retirement.
Interestingly, he points out how a man who preached and demanded discipline had little to none self-discipline.
Now I despise Doug Gottlieb. And I find it hard for a man convicted of misdemeanor fraud to pass judgment on anyone. But I do find myself agreeing with some of what he had to say.
Without a doubt, Bobby Knight is one of the greatest x's and o's coaches in the history of the game. He graduates his players, and runs a program that is cleaner than an operating room. But he always had a lot of bully in him. And as much as it pains me to say this, Doug you have some valid points.
