Want to Know How Mike Williams Can Get Back Into School?

If I told you there was information about how a student who was caught cheating and got kicked out of school could get back in, would that be something you're interested in?

Well that information is now out there and kudos to Post Standard reporter Donnie Webb for providing SU fans with the answer.

To cut to the chase, while no one can say it officially, theoretically, if the student who got cheating twice was Syracuse wide receiver Mike Williams (and this assumption is as safe as assuming OJ did it), he could possibly get back into school in January 2009 - in other words, AFTER the football season had ended.

It's a good news/bad news thing for head coach Greg Robinson. The bad news, his star receiver isn't playing for him this fall, the good news - maybe the real estate market will have rebounded and he won't have to take a loss when he puts his house on the market.

Just spitballin' here. But let's say this cheating student is also a scholarship athlete. If they come back in January 2009, I assume that means he or she would burn a year of eligibility. What if he or she sits out an entire year and comes back for the start of the 2009-10 footb...uh, I mean, athletic season? Would he or she still lose that year of eligibility?

Or could that athlete transfer to another school? Would they still have to sit out a year even though they were suspended or expelled?

Great questions - I'm not sure on losing a year of eligibility.

The thing with Williams is that he played as a true freshman, so he's got a red shirt year available to him as well - I'm not sure if you can redshirt when you're suspended or how that works.

As far as transferring, I don't think his suspension matters, because its an issue between him and SU - not the NCAA. If another school is fine with letting him in, I think he's all set to play. Of course if he transfers to another DI school he has to sit a year, but theoretically he could transfer to a 1-AA school and play right away.

I would think you HAVE to lose the year of eligibility. It's not like hurting yourself, which was not your fault. It's 100% your fault.

You would have to think so, but you do get 5 years to complete 4 years of eligibilty and this is the NCAA we are dealing with - they don't exactly make the most rational decisions all the time.

Not sure who this dude is, but he wrote confidently in the comments on Donnie Webb's post, so he must be right (though I'm not so confident it works this way)!

If MW returns, he'll have two years of eligibility left (since he never redshirted as a frosh). If he's re-admitted in January, it would be as if he "grayshirted" like any other January enrollee. He would still have 2 years whether he started in January 2009, or waited until Fall 2009.

His two years would run Spring 2009 to Fall 2009, and Spring 2010 to Fall 2010. Enough for two more football seasons. He could play Spring Football in 2009 to get ready for the 2009 season if he chooses. Since it was thought that he would jump to the NFL after 3 years, I doubt he would stick around and play in 2010.

If he enrolls in a 1-AA school, he can play right away. You don't have to sit out a year.
